  • Halfway To New York

    Halfway To New York
Halfway To New York morphs five talents into one musical message - poignant lyrics, catchy hooks and a fresh approach to British indie rock - nothing controversial, just great tunes and emotive lyrics.

With a string of packed out live performances under their belt, the highly-skilled musicians are quickly gaining critical acclaim as a cross between Doves and Snow Patrol, with a dash of Stereophonics thrown in for good measure.

They represent a new generation of indie rockers with a fresh serving of home-grown talent that's impossible to ignore. Their debut single 'Out of Time' is penned and produced by band members Sam Burkey and Ross O'Reilly and mixed by Simon Gogerly (Grammy award winner for U2's 'How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb').

    The band:

    Ross O'Reilly - guitarist and co-writer
Sam Burkey - lead vocals and co-writer

  • Jess Hall Band (now Colour The Atlas)

Jess Hall Band (now Colour The Atlas)
The Jess Hall Band are set to release their debut EP ‘Play Shy’ on December 5 (Hitone Records) following a Radio One playlist through BBC Introducing. The EP is the product of little over a year’s intense touring (including this year’s Beautiful Days Festival) and recording between Jess Hall and Swindon childhood friends Alex Stone, Andy Vincent and Stef Pysanczyn.

‘Play Shy’ pulls together three tender and engaging tracks drawn from Jess & Alex’s writing partnership, woven through with their signature dual harmonies, which recall the Angus & Julia Stone records which had so intrigued Jess as she grew up (‘when I first heard their record I just played it over and over again’).  The beguiling title track is the product of a co-write with Guy Sigsworth (Bjork and Madonna) and sets the tone for a high calibre debut.  The jaded parting detailed in ‘Let It Be Known’ betrays a creative insight which far outstrips the youth of a band of no more than 18 years old, whilst soaring EP closer ‘Grace’ (written several years ago by a very, very young Alex) draws on the influence of the Iron & Wine and Fleet Foxes records in which the band immersed themselves, to spin a slow-burning but propulsive track.

An incredibly assured group for one so young, the Jess Hall Band are shaped by various musical apprenticeships that extend a fair way prior to their current age. Jess herself grew up in a musical household- with encouragement from a mother and grandfather (who both played piano & organ) she made tentative recordings of her own material in an improvised studio in the modest surrounds of her dad’s garage. A fundamental fear of performing solo kept these tracks within the confines of the garage for several years, until an opportunistic ‘liberation’ brought the band into being; ‘Alex, Andy and Stef were all playing together in a different band at the time, so I nicked them!’ In the year that has passed since, Jess Hall Band have written, recorded and toured with a zealous work ethic.

‘Play Shy’ sees Jess Hall Band playing a strong opening hand, which points towards a promising future. Nonetheless it could all have been so different, had Jess perhaps succumbed to the dubious Rod Stewart records of her Dad’s vinyl catalogue, or failed to appropriate his garage as her studio- ‘I have no idea what else I’d do, I’m awful at everything! I work in a bar and I’m awful at that- if someone orders a cocktail I hide in the stairwell’. Hapless bartender maybe, but you sense that next time you see Jess Hall it won’t be hiding behind a bar.

  • John Wean

    John Wean
John Wean (pronounced John Wayne) are four lads who confess to writing songs about love, life and their biggest interest - girls!

'New York Doesn't Love You' is the second single from rising Scottish indie starlets.

Lead Singer Conor says: “I wrote New York one night after coming home from a party.

I had met a girl that I thought was spectacular but I never caught her name, and I never spoke to her again that evening and then when I got home I couldn't get her out of my mind so I tried to track her down on Facebook, something that turned out to be more than difficult! After trawling through friends in common for an hour or two I found her and was absolutely gutted when I found out that she had a boyfriend! There was a link to her twitter on her Facebook so I continued to delve further, after all she was the love of my life, and this was when I saw that her twitter name was “NEW YORK DOESN'T LOVE YOU”!!!

When I wrote the song I never realised the potential for the irony and double meanings I literally only wrote it be because her twitter name was “New York doesn't love you”. If it had been something else then the chorus would've been something totally different! As far as I’m aware she's still going out with her boyfriend so maybe he does love her quite a bit!”  “And she doesn’t know that I have a crush on her but once “New York Doesn’t Love You” reaches radio she soon will as the whole social networking scene will try and find out who she is!”

The song is a modern love story where boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, girl leaves without saying goodbye, and boy spends hours tracking her down on Facebook… its Cinderella but with no happy ending! Based on a true story ‘New York Doesn’t Love You’ will have the public searching just as hard as he did for the girl. The hunt begins…

Everyone who’s heard it has loved the track! So much so that there was a scramble amongst some pretty big name producers in America and Britain to do the Radio Mix.

Ultimately the band felt that the man who understood the single most and showed real love for it was, four-time Grammy Award-winning Record Producer and arguably the best mix engineer on the planet, the man that the likes of Blink-182, Weezer, The Fratellis, U2, Pink, Rolling Stones, No Doubt call on when they need that killer radio mix. Tom Lord-Alge

The band also managed to persuade the legendary Video Director Lenny Bass to direct and film the music video. We loved his work and realised very quickly that he wasn’t in out budget as he is still shooting Music Promos for $80K plus in this current climate.

He heard “New York Doesn’t Love You” loved the song and quoted that its also got such a great story to goes with it saying, “how could you not love it? That’s what makes hits records its something that the people can relate to.”

He said “let’s just make the Video don’t worry about the budget” because he thinks: " this song has the potential to be a hit".

The band are beginning to raise their profile with their website receiving 20,000 hits in the four short months since it went live. The boys regularly sell-out shows in Glasgow with highlights this year being the 300-capacity King Tut's and the 550-capacity Classic Grand using their social media and word of mouth platforms to create such a buzz! The next month sees them playing their first headline show in London as well as supporting such bands as The Pigeon Detectives in Dundee before traveling to NYC to film the video for 'New York Doesn't Love You'.

  • Reachback

    Reachback
A blossoming band, Reachback has bold and admirable intentions in the ‘teen rock’ market.

  • Scams

    Scams

Whether playing to expectant audiences in their adopted hometown of Leeds, or showcasing everywhere from Europe to the US, Scams are rapidly establishing a reputation as the genuine purveyors of a unique sound and a dynamic and infectious live act.

From the increasingly rare honesty in performance through to its consistent reflection in each album track, this is pop music without bullshit and without boundaries; more about heartfelt harmonies and searing melodies that carry openly sincere words.

Frontman Andy Morgan takes inspiration anywhere from early soul to modern dance; Michael Jackson to Four Tet; Marvin Gaye to Underworld. Bassist Adam Fenwick refers to his roots in post-hardcore rock, with additional inspiration coming from bands like Deftones, Biffy Clyro and Weezer. Second guitars come from quietly cool Jamie Macneal. Raised in Ayr on Radiohead, The Cure and The Smiths, Jamie’s seemingly effortless musicianship adds another angle to the influence. Basingstoke born Chris Burgess’ is the complete percussionist who offers up technical prowess and pop sensibilities.

The journey spans years and gigs, including performances at SXSW and recent tour supports in Germany and the UK for New Politics, Sick Puppies and Frankie and The Heartstrings. Their debut album ‘Rewrite Fiction’ helped to shape the sound of the band and they have now completed all recording for the next album, due for release in May 2012. Once again they recorded with producer Johann Scheerer in Hamburg and the album has been mixed by Matt Wignall at his home in Longbeach, California.

As hardworking as any stereotype of ‘the classic British band’, rock may not be their pigeonhole, but it’s a big part of their attitude. Scams sound is carefully arranged but not over-thought, spanning a variety of music styles yet still maintaining an identity.
